Italian Industry Minister Claudio Scajola has welcomed news of a deal between Chrysler LLC and Fiat, saying he would work to facilitate dialogue with Italian trade unions.
“A Fiat that is stronger in the world will be stronger in Italy as well and will make Italy stronger in the world,” said Scajola in a statement. “I commit myself to favour dialogue between Fiat and unions.”
The deal has been well received in Italy and portrayed in the press as a source of national pride.
‘Turin triumphs in America,’ said financial daily Il Sole 24 Ore. ‘Fiat lands in America,’ was the headline on La Repubblica. Turin-based daily La Stampa, owned by the Fiat group, called it a ‘historic deal.’ Corriere della Sera proclaimed Fiat ‘the pride of Turin and all Italy’.
