“My interest is that Lapo recovers soon and returns to working with the same passion and the same enthusiasm,” said Fiat group chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.

Elkann was hospitalised on October 10 after attending a late night party in a Turin apartment where police found traces of cocaine, heroin and opium.

“I wonder how I could have been so stupid. I created a real mess and I risked death,” Lapo is quoted as saying in the Italian media.

Elkann, 28, is the grandson of former Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli, who died in 2003.
