Fiat union FIOM has called a general strike for this Friday (9 March) as it looks to kick-start a national bargaining agreement.

The union – with 350,000 members – is asking for a new bargaining deal as well as the retention of the so-called ‘Law 300’ that prevents workers from being sacked without good reason.

“Obviously it [strike] is not helpful,” a Fiat spokeswoman in Turin told just-auto, although she did confirm the walkout was limited only to FIOM and not to Fiat’s several other unions.

FIOM secretary-general Maurizio Landini will hold a press conference tomorrow (6 March) in Trieste to provide further details and reasons behind the strike, that will also be accompanied by a demonstration in Rome.
