Marchionne left after taking part in overnight talks in Germany about the future of Opel, for which Fiat is competing in a bidding war against Magna.
Fiat has entered a partnership with Chrysler, which is going through bankruptcy court. A second day of hearings has begun in New York and may extend into a third as a judge hears objections ahead of approving the bankruptcy.
