The
number of vehicles on Israeli roads increased 4.7 percent in 2000, according to
information presented to Ministry of Transportation director general Ben Zion
Salman.

The data showed that in January 2001, 1.9 million vehicles were registered
in Israel compares with 1.813 million in 1999.

The number of private vehicles rose 5.4 percent with private registered vehicles
totalling 1.402 million compares with 1.330 million in 1999.

Last year, there were 267,630 commercial vehicles, 45,510 trucks, 14,882 taxis,
28,466 buses and 77,760 motorcycles on Israeli roads, with an average age of
7.1 years.

The average age of private vehicles was 7.3 years, taxis 2.9 years and motorcycles
5.4 years.

Over the past decade, the number of vehicles has risen 80 percent.
