Toyota Motor’s Indonesian distributor, Toyota Astra Motor, began selling the new version of its best-selling Avanza model this week, ahead of next week’s Indonesian International Auto Show.

The new version of the Avanza compact MPV, which is still produced at Astra Daihatsu Motor’s (ADM) plant in North Jakarta, features Toyota’s new 1.3L and 1.5L Dual-VVTI petrol engines. These are assembled separately at Toyota’s new engine plant in Karawang, some 70km east of Jakarta.

The new Avanza comes in two variants, Standard and Veloz, each with two redesigned front-ends and tailgates, new headlights and instrumentation and keyless ignition. Apart from these updates, the changes look minor.

The standard model (in grey) has front-end styling akin to the larger Innova MPV, while the styling of the Veloz front-end is similar to the latest Camry passenger car model.

ADM produced a total of 246,000 built-up and knocked-down Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu-equivalents (Xenias) last year, down from a peak of 316,000 units in 2013, reflecting a slowdown in economic growth in the country amid higher interest rates.

The Avanza, a tall seven-seater MPV, is targeted at emerging markets.
