The Indonesian government plans to invest IDR1.64trn (US$116m) to build a new vehicle test track to help strengthen the country's automotive industry, according to local reports.

The ministry of transport said construction of the new 19-hectare proving ground and test track is scheduled to start in 2022 in Bekasi, a satellite city east of the capital Jakarta – close to where most of the country's vehicle plants are located.

Transportation minister Budi Karya Sumadi confirmed the test track was scheduled to be completed in 2024 and would be built to United Nations Regulation (UNR) standards on vehicles– which is a benchmark recognized by other ASEAN member countries.

The facilities would be available to manufacturers of all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, three wheelers and four wheeled vehicles.

Sumadi told reporters the test track would help Indonesian automotive manufacturers strengthen their position in key export markets by helping to make their products "more compliant with other markets' standards, particularly within the ASEAN region".

Budi Setiyadi, director general of the land transportation department, said the new proving ground would strengthen the country's existing automotive testing capabilities, with additional international standard testing facilities for emissions, noise levels, crash and safety.

Setiyadi suggested the new facilities would help "increase overseas trust in Indonesian automotive products. The new proving grounds, covering an area of 90 hectares, would be the biggest in the ASEAN region".
