New vehicle sales in Indonesia rose by 6.2% to 94,090 units in May, from 88,560 units a year earlier, according to data released by industry association Gaikindo.

The country's economy continued to benefit from low interest rates over the last year, which have helped underpin domestic consumption, and more recently from a recovery in commodity prices and exports.

Separately, the country's largest vehicle distributor Astra International is reported to have sold 50,350 vehicles last month to claim a 54% share of the total market. Of these, 32,910 units were Toyota models, 15,610 were Daihatsus and 1,540 Isuzus.

Total vehicle sales in the first five months of the year rose by 6.1% to 467,530 units from 440,640 units a year earlier. This follows a 4.7% sales rise to 1,062,729 units last year – up from 1,013,291 units in 2015 after a two-year decline.

After a strong overall performance in the first quarter, Gaikindo said it is cautiously optimistic on the full year outlook for the vehicle market – predicting a 4% sales rise to around 1.1m units in 2017.
