New vehicle sales in Indonesia increased by 4.5% to 106,811 units in April, from 102,257 units a year earlier, according to data released by Indonesia’s automotive industry association Gaikindo.
The market last month was underpinned by sales of small cars sold under the government’s Low-Cost Green Car (LCGC) programme, which amounted to 13,649 units compared with none a year earlier. These cars accounted for 12.8% of total vehicle sales and 17.5% of the 77,893 light passenger vehicles sales last month.

Demand for other types of light passenger vehicles continued to weaken, however, by 12.6% to 64,244 units in April – held back by last year’s interest rate hikes and tougher lending regulations. The market has also had four years of strong growth and record volumes. Sales of trucks and buses increased slightly to 28,918 units, from 28,772 a year earlier.
Overall vehicle sales in the first four months of 2014 increased by 9.3% to 435,182 units, from 398,249 units in the same period of last year, including 57,648 LCGCs, 257,802 other types of light passenger vehicles and 119,732 trucks and buses.
