The Indonesian new vehicle market declined by 6.9% to 90,077 units in August, from 96,652 units a year earlier, according to wholesale data released by industry association Gaikindo.

This rate of decline was much slower than in recent months, and volumes significantly higher, reflecting recent efforts to reduce dealer stocks ahead of the launch of important new models, particularly the Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia.

Sales last month were also supported by last month’s Indonesian International Auto Show, which was switched to August this year from September last year.

Cumulative sales in the first eight months of 2015 fell by just over 19% to 671,183 units, from 830,105 units a year earlier, reflecting slowing economic growth in the country, high interest rates and rising inflation.

The association has reduced its full-year sales forecast to between 950,000-1,000,000 units, from an earlier forecast 1.1m units.
