New vehicle sales in Indonesia rose by 25.2% to a new monthly record of 82,058 units, from 65,555 units a year earlier, according to industry association Gaikindo.
It is thought that the market has been lifted by fears of future supply shortages as a result of last month’s earthquake in Japan. Also, buyers have been locking in purchases ahead of possible interest rate hikes.

First quarter sales rose 29.5% to 225,413 units from 174,072 units a year earlier with commercial vehicle sales outperforming with growth of 36.6% to 68,181 units. Sales of light passenger vehicles rose by 26.6% to 157,232 units.
