The Indonesian vehicle market has been hit by several factors, including a gloomy domestic economic outlook, political instability and the government’s severe fiscal problems.

In a statement, Astra put total 2001 car sales by members of Indonesia’s automotive industry association Gaikindo at 339,607 units – a 2% drop on the previous year.

Most analysts forecast a depressed vehicle market in Indonesia in 2002, with a recovery taking hold in 2003 and beyond as the economy improves.
