New vehicle sales in Indonesia rose 15% month on month to 34,396 units in September, as a recent fall in interest rates spurred demand for car loans, Dow Jones reported.

According to data released Tuesday by Gaikindo, the car assemblers’ association, passenger car sales – a barometer of consumer confidence – rose 28% to 3,956 units in September from 3,103 in August, the report said.
Commercial vehicles accounted for 30,440 units of all vehicles sold, up from 26,949 units a month earlier, the association reportedly said.
According to Dow Jones, the association said so far this year, Indonesian consumers have bought 268,550 new vehicles compared with 240,471 in the first nine months of last year.
The country’s largest vehicle maker, PT Astra International, saw a 12% month-on-month increase in domestic sales to 13,941 units in September, Dow Jones said, noting that the company has a joint venture with Toyota to distribute the Japanese company’s vehicles in Indonesia.
