The Indonesian capital Jakarta saw further demonstrations against the country’s controversial practice of labour outsourcing by global manufacturing companies.

Among those accused of this practice, which involves engaging third-party companies to hire people to work alongside full time workers in core production operations, are electronics giant Samsung and Toyota, the biggest-selling vehicle brand in the country.

Wednesday’s protests, organised by the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Union (KSPI), concentrated on the main traffic circle in central Jakarta and outside the Japanese and South Korean embassies.

Outsourced workers do not enjoy the same welfare, pensions and holiday benefits as workers employed full time directly by the principal company.

The government in October moved to restrict the practice of outsources in manufacturing to non production support operations such as security, transportation, catering and cleaning.
