Astra International, Indonesia’s largest car distributor, unveiled a new small car ahead of the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) which runs between 20-30th September at the Jakarta International Expo centre.

The new four-door hatchback will be produced at Astra Daihatsu Motor’s newly-built plant in Karawang, some 70km (40 miles) east of Jakarta and is badged as the Toyota Agya and as the Daihatsu Ayla.

It is fitted with a one-litre engine which gives the car a fuel consumption of one litre per 30km (20 miles) of normal driving. It has an aluminium body to reduce weight.

Four variants of the car will be available under the Daihatsu badge with prices ranging between IDR75m (US$7,865) for the basic option without air conditioning, power steering and radio, to a fully kitted out variant costing IDR105m.

Prices are “subject to change” Amelia Tjandra, marketing director for Astra Daihatsu Motor, told local reporters during the car’s unveiling, “depending on what tax incentives the government introduces to promote low-consumption cars”.

Daihatsu expects the government to unveil a new “Low-Cost Green Car“ (LCGC) policy at the end of 2012, comprising special tax incentives to encourage the purchase of small, eco-friendly cars produced locally with minimum local content levels.

Daihatsu believes its new small car will qualify for the incentives.

Daihatsu already builds two other cars for Toyota – the Avanza MPV and the Rush SUV, based on the Daihatsu Xenia and Terios respectively.
