Indonesia’s PT Astra Daihatsu Motor is investing up to IDR650bn (US$69m) in a local R&D centre to help cement its position as the country’s largest vehicle manufacturer.
President-director Sudirman Maman Rusdi said the company had already begun the first stage of the investment – next to the company’s new car plant in Karawang, around 70km east of Jakarta.

Astra Daihatsu’s new IDR2.1 trillion small car plant is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2012, increasing the company’s Indonesian annual capacity by 100,000 to 430,000 units.
The new R&D facility will likely focus on styling and interior trim, and help improve quality.
