Run in partnership with the local edition of Autocar magazine, the competition hopes to identify pinpoint talented individuals and design colleges for future partnerships with Renault Design.

“The entries will help Renault understand and identify the specific Indian cultural attributes that are applicable to automobile design,” the automaker said, adding it would reward the winner with three months’ work placement in the design centre.

Renault Design India is said to be the first local design operation of a western car manufacturer in India.  It has been an observational unit since 2005 but will now design vehicles for the Indian and other regional markets. Its role will go from initial project design through to final mock-up.

It currently has just six employees, five  of whom are Indian nationals, and is looking to hire more high-potential designers.

The centre in Mumbai was involved in the 2006 Logan Steppe concept car and the MMI (Man Machine Interface) concept. Renault Design India also carried out R&D work on top-end fabrics in order, Renault said, “to tap into India’s rich textile-oriented heritage”.

Future roles will include assisting with current and future range development in India; developing ‘perceived quality’ expertise; developing accessories from design to production; and integrating the centre into the overall vehicle design process.
