The company sold around 1500 units in 2008 and hopes to more than double that this year.

VW hopes to drive sales growth in India through the hatchback and sedan versions of its Polo model, as well as a strengthened dealer network and a local finance arm.

”Our real volumes come in with the Polo that we launch in 2010, in both hatchback and sedan versions,” Volkswagen India’s director for passenger cars, Neeraj Garg, said.

“The premium hatchback segment in India is showing very promising growth — there’s huge opportunity,” he added.

The Polo will be manufactured at the company’s new Chakan plant near Pune which opened in March and has the capacity to produce 110,000 cars a year.

The company is also planning to sell its new Beetle in India.
