According to the India Times, Volkswagen is in talks with several potential partners as part of its strategy to expand across Asia.
Volkswagen is already building a passenger car plant in India, due to come on stream in 2009. It will have capacity to produce 110,000 vehicles a year.
The company already imports Crafter and Caravelle light trucks into India.
Volkswagen member Harald Schomburg is reported as saying at the Hannover motor show that in addition to producing a new small car based on the Polo in India from 2010, Volkswagen is also looking to produce a new commercial vehicle. He said that at the moment Volkswagen does not have a product that meets Indian needs.
