Volkswagen India has built its 50,000th car in its manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune.

It’s less thah two years since production started there. The plant produces three models, the VW Polo and its ‘booted’ Vento sibling (the milestone car was one of these) and the Skoda Fabia.

“Touching the 50,000th car production landmark marks the beginning of Volkswagen’s next growth chapter in India. Realizing this target in just over a year’s time from the start of production is a testimony to the popularity Volkswagen cars enjoy in the Indian market,” visiting top executive Arno Antlitz said.

Pune is one of 61 VW plants worldwide. It’s not a kitset assembly unti – it covers all stages in the production process from press shop through body shop and paint shop to final assembly.

The INR380bn (EUR580m) plant cost is the largest investment to date by a German company in India.
