April 2012 vehicle production (including two- and three-wheelers) in India grew 5.81% year on year to 1,721,627 units, the Society of Indian Auto Manufacturers (SIAM) said.
Domestic sales rose 10.01% to 168,351. The passenger vehicles segment grew 9.3% last month with cars up 3.4%, utility vehicles soaring 47.32% and van sales rising 6.74%.

Sales had risen 20% in March, the biggest monthly hike in a year, as customers rushed to buy cars before manufacturer price hikes in response to an excise duty increase came into effect.
The commercial vehicles segment grew 4.37% in April though medium and heavy model sales dipped 11.6% as light commercial volume grew 15.83%.
April exports grew fractionally at 1.29% with passenger vehicle shipments down 10.47%. Commercial vehicle exports also slipped – 13.62% – and only bike and trike exports rose.
