About 1,200 Hyundai Santro Xing cars being loaded on to a ship at the port in Chennai [Madras] were swamped by tsunami waves last week.
The company had 3,000 cars at the port and 750 had already been loaded. About 1,200 of the remaining cars were completely drenched while parked dockside and it was reported that sea water had entered at least some.
Hyundai Motors India has stopped that particular batch of cars – headed for Algeria and Europe – from being loaded. It is inspecting the affected cars before deciding if they should be scrapped. They are fully insured.
