As it finally launched the Etios Liva hatchback developed specially for India, following on from the sedan version launched earlier, Toyota Motor on Monday said it would spend about JPY4.9bn to increase its vehicle production capacity in India by 40% in 2012 to meet growing demand there.

Capacity at its two car manufacturing plants in India will be raised to a combined 210,000 units from the current 150,000 units in the first half of next year.

The move comes amid strong sales in India, Kyodo News reported.

Toyota Kirloskar, the joint venture with the Indian Kirloskar group, expects to sell over 100,000 Etios sedans and hatchbacks in 2012, Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director, told Reuters at the Liva launch.
