Tatra Trucks India Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between Tatra AS and Vectra Investments, is a niche player in the Indian commercial vehicle sector with mostly special purpose vehicles for mining applications being offered. Now the company is setting up a new unit for manufacturing seating systems for commercial vehicles in a technical tie-up with the Spanish company Fainsa.

The new unit will come up in Hosur in South India and will make seating systems for luxury buses, trains and other vehicles. The unit is likely to be up by October this year and will have a capacity of 250,000 units per year.

Tatra expects to supply these seats to other commercial vehicle manufacturers and also use India as an export base.

Tatra is now looking at entering the on-highway truck segment in India with tractor-trailers and multi-axle trucks. The company has also started an engine production line and cabin assembly line at its Hosur plant last year.
