This is Scania’s first foray in the growing Indian truck market. Competitors DaimlerChrysler and Volvo are already present, and MAN and International Trucks have joint ventures there (with Force Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra respectively).
The top end of the Indian heavy truck market is estimated at just 1,000 units a year, but it is growing at a rate of around 30% per annum thanks to heavy investment in infrastructure and mining.
L&T will distribute Scania’s range of heavy duty multi-axle trucks with 300-500hp in India. They would be targeted at the construction and mining secotrs.
L&T already supplies hydraulic excavators, loader backhoes, vibratory compactors, aggregate crushing systems, stacker-reclaimers and surface miners for the sector, representing a number of brands.
