Tata Motors overtook Hyundai as India’s second-biggest passenger vehicle maker in June, as sales of its Nano budget car begin to gain traction.

Production of the Nano has now started at the Tata factory in Sanand in Gujarat. With 7,704 Nano sales, Tata volumes were up 63% at 27,811 units, against Hyundai’s 27,366 – up 19%).

Industry watchers said strong Nano sales could see Tata outpace Hyundai ona regular basis.

Car companies in India again reported strong sales numbers in June, backed by strong demand for new models and affordable financing rates.

The country’s biggest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, saw sales in the domestic market rise 18% year-on-year to 72,812 units, though numbers were down on a sequential basis as demand for cars remains usually subdued in the monsoon months and it had its usual six-day June maintenance shutdown.

General Motors and Ford, who have both introduced new small cars, the Chevrolet Beat and Figo respectively, also reported sales increases. Toyota reported sales up 41.5% in June, and Mercedes 94%, although they came from a relatively small base number.

Utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra sales were down as UV sales fell 4% in June and the company said it had an annual shutdown in the first week of the month.
