The automatic Scorpio has a 2.2-litre engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox is permanently sealed and no oil change is needed.
M&M developed the transmission in Nashik using components sourced from Drivetrain Systems in Australia, according to Vivek Nayer, M&M’s marketing chief. The cooling systems, emission controls and central console were also developed in India.
“Traffic in any city is increasing at an alarming rate and driving involves constant gear changes. [Customers need] this option,” Nayer said.
Production will be according to demand and no volume targets have been set. M&M sells around 3,000 Scorpios a month.
