Maruti Suzuki has halted production at its Gurgaon plant for two days due to production constraints arising out of the ongoing unrest at its Manesar plant and other surrounding plants.

A statement said: “Maruti Suzuki has decided to suspend production at the Gurgaon plant on 14 October and 15 October. This is in view of the non-availability of components for cars.”

The plant works on just-in-time (JIT) which means any unforeseen disruption in the supply chain could cause a hindrance in production.

Workers at Suzuki Powertrain also went on a flash strike to express their support for workers at the Manesar plant and that hit supplies of gearbox and other engine components to Gurgaon so the carmaker decided to temporarily shut down the plant.

Gurgaon could build the M800, Omni, Eeco and Gypsy despite the strikes but this is unviable.

Gurgaon also produces some of Maruti’s best selling models including Alto, Dzire and the Swift hatchback.

The Dzire could lose potential customers to Tata’s Manza and the Toyota Etios while Hyundai’s new Eon is a formidable challenge to India’s largest selling car, the Alto.

Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court declined to declare the strike as illegal after Maruti filed a petition.

However, the court did direct protesters to leave the factory premises and said that no protest was allowed within 100m of the Manesar plants.
