Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is considering contesting the sub-800cc segment in India, according to a local media report.
Business Standard said two Suzuki models – the Palette and MR Wagon – would be shown at the Delhi Auto Expo in January. These cars are powered by the parent company’s smallest engine, 660c, as required for Japanese minicar, or kei-class, classification.
Depending on showgoers’ feedback, production versions of one or both for India could be introduced by 2013 or 2014.
Business Standard said the new small car plan was prompted by a continuous slide of Maruti’s share of the passenger car segment.
This declined seven percentage points to 38% by the end of October 2011 from 45% in the same period of 2010.
