India’s largest auto-maker Maruti Udyog Ltd. has resumed operations for the first time for three weeks after workers went on strike, say Asian news media (8/11/00). According to Indian sources, production levels decreased to 300 vehicles per day since strike action began on October 12 – a far cry from the 1330 units produced on Tuesday (7/11/00). Maruti did however maintain 50 per cent market share despite production loss due to the strike, according to a company spokesperson.
Out of a workforce totalling 5,700, more than 3,800 employees have rejoined – after giving a ‘good conduct undertaking’.
