Maruti Suzuki has priced its newly launched five-seater Eeco multipurpose vehicle at INR259,000 (US$5,640), as competition for low-cost vehicles heats up.

The seven-seater version will sell for INR275,000 and an electric version is on show at the New Delhi motor show. The Eeco is expected initially to sell 40,000 units annually, Maruti has said.


The model – essentially an Indian version of the Suzuki Carry van – has a 1,200cc petrol engine, five-speed gearbox with an improved shift mechanism and optional air conditioning, according to Maruti.


Modifications for India include a higher ground clearance to cope with rough roads.
