Lotus Engineering is planning to set up an engineering centre in India within the next 12 to 18 months, according to sources in India following a recent visit by Lotus Engineering officials.

A team from Lotus visited India recently to gather information on the automotive segment and engineering skills available there. This is not the first time a major foreign automobile design company has come to India looking to set up a base in India. EDAG already has a centre in India.

Lotus has already received two major contracts from the Indian automobile industry within the last 12 months. Lotus said that its findings concerning the engineering skills in India were encouraging and that the growth of the automotive market in India holds a lot of opportunities for Lotus to set up an engineering division in India.

Lotus is looking to benefit from a wave of outsourcing to low-cost locations. The company started its unit in China in March 2005.

A SIAM (Indian auto industry trade body) delegation that visited Malaysia – home to Lotus Engineering parent Proton – recently said that Lotus officials made a presentation of their service offerings which included engineering and design services for the automobile industry. SIAM officials also said Lotus is looking to find a local associate in India.
