The company sold almost 253,000 vehicles in 2005, and produces six models – the Sonata, Tucson, Terracan, Elantra, Santro and Getz.
Hyundai recently said that it plans aims to double output in India by 2007.
Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-koo said the company plans to produce 600,000 vehicles a year for the domestic market and for export to Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
Hyundai plans to sell 280,000 cars in India this year and 600,000 in 2008.
The automaker is building a second plant alongside its first in Irrunattukottia, near Chennai. This is due to come on-stream in 2007 with capacity for 300,000 units, up from the originally announced 150,000.
Hyundai is also expanding its existing plant from 280,000 units now to 300,000 next year.
