This is the third generation Elantra that was launched globally in the year 2000 and facelifted in July 2003. The car is being offered in India with 1.8-litre, 127PS petrol or 2.0-litre, 112PS turbocharged-intercooled CRDi diesel engines.

Pricing is most important in the sensitive Indian market and Hyundai India is known to ‘sticker’ their products competitively. The Elantra undercuts the rival Toyota Corolla and Skoda Octavia at INR869,000 (€16,300) for the base petrol model to INR1,049,000 (€19,700) for the top end diesel variant.

The Elantra is assembled on the Sonata line at the Hyundai plant in Irrungattukottai, near Chennai, with local content starting at 40% in the first year of production. Annual sales are projected at 8,000.
