One of China’s most popular vehicles, the SGMW joint venture’s Wuling Hong Guang, is about to go on sale in India as the locally assembled Chevrolet Enjoy.

The seven-seater passenger micro-van is due in dealerships on 9 May, having originally premiered at the New Delhi Auto Expo back in January 2012. It will be a rival for the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Assembly began at GM India’s Halol plant in the state of Gujarat in February and has recently been ramped up.

In October 2012, GM raised its stake in its Indian joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) from 50% to 93%. The firm purchased the additional 43% from SAIC at an undisclosed amount.

The JV, known as General Motors India, started as an equal joint venture between SAIC and GM in late 2009. GM announced plans at that time to launch several vehicles using the SAIC platforms, including three light commercial vehicles (LCVs), in order to strengthen its foothold in the fast-growing Indian car market.
