General Motors on Friday said it had more than doubled annual production capacity in India to 60,000 units to meet growing demand for its Chevrolet and Opel brands.

According to Reuters, GM is expanding its facility in the western state of Gujarat, which currently makes 25,000 units a year, and production can be stepped up further if required.
“Our Halol plant is fully geared to produce up to 80,000 units or more, in three shifts, if need be,” Aditya Vij, president and managing director of General Motors India, told the news agency.
Reuters noted that GM had said in January it would invest $US69 million to double its capacity in India but gave no details.
The report said General Motors India produces several variants of the German-engineered Opel Corsa and GM-Daewoo designed Chevrolet Optra sedans as well as the Tavera SUV – it also imports the Opel Vectra and Subaru-built Chevrolet Forester.
