Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn believes that the global car market has bottomed and is set to hit 60m units in 2009.

That compares with his earlier forecast for this year of 55m units, he said.


“It looks like we are here hitting a plateau,” he told a World Economic Forum event in New Delhi.


“Plans for expansion and capacity can be resumed with a much more solid understanding of how this crisis will end,” he said.


Ghosn also pointed out that the recovery to volume in the auto industry is uneven, with China, India and South America playing a key role, along with a gradually recovering US market.


However, he was gloomy about market prospects in Europe and Japan.


“I’m afraid Europe and Japan are still going to have a tough year in 2010,” he told reporters.


Ghosn has warned before that the West European car market faces a reversal in 2010 when temporary scrappage schemes that have boosted sales in 2009, come to an end.
