According to Reuters, General Motors India, a wholly-owned unit of the US automaker, said it sold 1,859 cars in the past month, up from 1,309 units in February 2004.
The news agency noted that GM has been in India since the mid-1990s and produces several variants of the German-engineered Opel Corsa and [GM Daewoo-designed] Chevrolet Optra sedans as well as the Tavera sports utility vehicle (SUV) at its plant in the western state of Gujarat.
It also imports the fully built Opel Vectra and the [Subaru-made] Forester SUV. The automaker reportedly said in a statement it sold 1,300 units of the Tavera, 350 units of the Chevrolet Optra, 207 units of the Opel Corsa and two Foresters.
Reuters said the company, which is ramping up its annual production capacity to 60,000 units, has a less than 3% share of India’s car sales as most of its models are positioned in the mid-size segment, that makes up just a quarter of the market demand.
Three quarters of India’s car market is made up of small, low-price hatchbacks where GM barely has a presence, the report noted.
