Ford India has started production of its new Figo – an updated, previous generation European Fiesta – at its Chennai production plant following a USD500m investment.
The new model doubles capacity at the plant to 200,000 units a year and it will also produce both diesel and petrol engines on a new flexible line. The factory can now produce up to 10 different engines for both domestic and export sale.

The Figo will be manufactured primarily for the domestic market although it is slated for export to other countries, including South Africa, as early as mid-year.
The sub B sector where Figo will be competing accounts for over 70% of India’s total new car sales.
The Chennai factory has undergone a major expansion to establish India as a major hub for the entire region. Relying more on Indian partners, 85% of the new Figo is expected to sourced locally. More than 700 new jobs have been created at Ford India at the expanded assembly and engine factory in the last year.
