Building on the success of the Figo for which new export markets have been announced, Ford said it would launch eight new models to rapidly expand its presence in India.
“We have big plans for India and this region. By the middle of this decade, Ford will introduce eight new vehicles from its global platform. The move would bring more vehicles from our global portfolio to India and other markets in Asia Pacific and Asia,” said Joe Hinrichs, head of the automaker’s Asia Pacific & Africa regions.
Ford has already sold over 30,000 units of the Figo in the 25 weeks after its launch in India.
Exports to South Africa began last May. The company is also exporting diesel powertrains to South Africa and 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines to Thailand. The launch and export of Ford Figo and the engines are the result of a US$ 500m investment here to expand vehicle manufacturing and set up an engine plant.
Ford’s Asia Pacific region includes Australia, China, India, Thailand and South Africa. Industry sales in the region will increase from 16m units in 2009 to an estimated 35m units by 2018. The region is expected to account for nearly 70% of Ford’s worldwide growth in the next decade.
