An analysis of fiscal 2002 vehicle sales in The Economic Times of India reveals that Fiat’s Palio ‘world car’ has made a significant market impact there, although Maruti Udyog is way out in front as the market leader.
Maruti managed to slightly increase its share of the car market to 59.5% in fiscal 2002 (runs May through April) and sales of 335,000 cars. Hyundai was in second place with a market share of 15.6%.
Fiat India doubled its market share from 1.65 per cent to 3.77 per cent with sales of 21,277 units riding on the success of the Palio. Since the launch of the Palio in October 2001, Fiat has captured 11% of the ‘B’ segment – India’s largest.
