Indian transport companies and heavy vehicle manufacturers are protesting against the imposition of anti-dumping duty on truck and bus radial tyres imported from China and Thailand.

On 1 January, the ministry of commerce and industry imposed duties ranging from US$24.97 (INR1,150) to $88.27 (INR4,000) to protect the domestic industry from ‘artificially cheaper’ imports, the Hindustan Times reported.
But the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) claimed the duties would delay the switch to radial tyres for commercial vehicles.
“The duty will raise prices of tyres and that will ultimately have to be borne by commercial vehicle manufacturers,” a senior SIAM official told the paper. “There is a demand-supply mismatch in tyre supplies and steps to restrict imports will only worsen it.”
SIAM had recommended earlier that OEMs be exempt from any restrictions and a reference price for imports be introduced instead.
