The Indian government needs to fix the country’s roads rather than demand increasing safety measures from carmakers, their key trade group said.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said it was improper to push plans to add safety features in vehicles without addressing several other factors including road design, geometrics, enforcement of speed and other traffic rules.

SIAM director general Vishnu Mathur said: “Across the world vehicle safety issue has come under focus after the government agencies take necessary steps to create a safer environment. Just building pressure on automobile manufacturers to add features is not fair.”

Speaking at an industry conference, Mathur added safety features come in to play only after an accident takes place and there needed to be more focus on preventing accidents. The Indian government recently announced a mandatory safety rating regime from September 2017.

Government officials told the Times of India it was “addressing all issues” and that safety features should reduce chances of fatalities and injuries.
