Ashok Leyland, India’s second largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has reported a net profit of INR142.76 million for the fourth quarter ended March 2005, compared to INR87.32 million in the same period of 2004, an increase of 63.52%.

Total income (net of excise) increased from INR1125.26 million to INR1491.94 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2005.


For financial year 2004-05, ALL posted a net profit of INR271.41 million compared to INR193.58 million for the previous year, an increase of 40%. Total income increased from INR3.41 billion to INR4.24 billion.


The commercial vehicle sector in India is buoyant and Ashok Leyland is benefiting from the trend. The company has also received some big orders from state governments for buses and some export orders for military trucks from Iraq, Sudan and other middle-eastern countries.


Last year the company had suffered due to a prolonged strike in the engine plant.
