Hyundai Motor has confirmed it will produce the redesigned Tucson SUV at its US plant for North American markets.

The South Korean automaker plans to launch production of petrol and petrol-hybrid versions of the 2022 Tucson model at the Alabama plant early next year. The company’s main Tucson production plant, in Ulsan, South Korea, will supply plug-in hybrid versions for sale in North America.

This is part of a major product offensive under which Hyundai plans to launch 12 new SUV models in the US in the next 15 months, including conventional and low emission versions of the new Tucson N-line, which was unveiled in the US this week, the Santa Fe, Kona and Santa Cruz.

Hyundai Motor Group product division chief Thomas Schemera said in a statement “our new Tucson represents the future of Hyundai’s full spectrum eco-powertrain approach, offering internal combustion, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in a high volume, compact SUV”.

Hyundai sold 500,820 vehicles in the US in the first 10 months of 2020, down 11% on the 563,450 units sold in the same period of last year.
