South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has announced it has entered into a strategic partnership with UK-based AI startup Cusp AI Ltd, to accelerate the development of new materials through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
HMG described Cambridge-based Cusp AI as a frontier AI startup pioneering the discovery of breakthrough materials through the use of AI technologies, adding that the two companies have signed a partnership agreement to establish a framework for their collaboration across multiple domains. “By integrating data-driven simulations with proprietary AI models, Cusp AI has created an AI-powered ‘search engine’ for materials, with the potential to dramatically reduce the time and cost traditionally required for materials development.”

HMG further stated that “the rapid advancement of AI technology has established ‘AI for Science’ as an emerging paradigm for addressing complex scientific challenges, particularly by driving innovative approaches in the pharmaceutical and materials industries. Expanding beyond widely known applications like language or image generation, AI for Science can leverage generative AI to analyse extensive scientific datasets, propose novel molecular structures or biological sequences, and significantly reduce the time, cost, and uncertainty involved in research and development.”
HMG added that in this context, it aims to “accelerate the adoption of AI technologies to enhance the efficiency, durability, and stability of next-generation materials, integrating them into its future smart mobility solutions.”
Chul Park, Head of HMG’s New Business Strategy Group, said in a statement: “HMG is driving transformative change in mobility through fundamental materials innovation. By applying AI to solve scientific challenges that conventional methods cannot address, this partnership will strengthen our global leadership in sustainable, next-generation mobility.”
Chad Edwards, CEO and co-founder of Cusp AI, said: “Next-generation materials are the only path to a more sustainable future. By partnering with HMG, which brings world-class manufacturing expertise and a drive for materials innovation, we can build that future faster. AI allows industry leaders to move beyond slow, experimental progress and start delivering greener, more efficient solutions. We’re delighted to welcome Hyundai Motor Group as a long-term partner in realising this vision.”
