The Hyundai ‘Kona Electric’ SUV – which goes on sale in Europe this summer – will feature two different electric powertrain options. A larger battery (the ‘long-range’ version) will offer a range of almost 292 miles/470km (internal target under WLTP regulations) and a smaller battery (‘short-range’ version) will manage 186 miles/300km on a full charge, Hyundai says.

The long-range version comes with a 64 kWh battery for energy consumption of 15.2 kWh/100 km (internal target under WLTP regulations). The electric motor delivers an output of 150 kW, accelerating the Kona Electric to 100 kph in 7.6 seconds.

With a battery capacity of 39.2 kWh, the basic version delivers 99 kW of output and an energy consumption as low as 14.8 kWh/100 km (internal target under WLTP regulations), Hyundai says.

“Hyundai Motor is already leading in future mobility solutions,” says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President Marketing and Product at Hyundai Motor Europe. “By launching our All-New Kona Electric, we are pushing our ambitious eco car strategy forward. It’s a car of no compromise – combining an SUV body type with electric-mobility.”

Hyundai says the Kona Electric enables customers to combine the two fastest growing automotive trends – electrification and SUV style and carries the same expressive design and functionality of the regular Kona. The company also says the completely new platform of the Kona enables a space-saving integration of the battery packs without compromising the roominess.

Hyundai Motor India told the local media in January 2018 that the Kona Electric would be locally assembled from 2019.
