Hyundai Cradle, which Hyundai Motor Group describes as its corporate venturing and open innovation business, in early October said it was investing in US fleet safety management software company Netradyne to gain access to the firm's more than 350m miles of detailed road mapping data.

Hyundai Cradle said it expected its partnership with Netradyne would help Hyundai Motor Group develop more advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies for the US in the next few years.

The value of the investment in Netradyne was not disclosed.

More specifically, Hyundai said the new partnership would support further development of Level 3+ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (L3+ ADAS) and Autonomous Driving features that it plans to launch over the next few years.

Netradyne uses artificial intelligence (AI) vision based dashcam devices to monitor the safety performance of commercial vehicle fleets in the US.

The data collected from these devices also helps create high definition (HD) road maps, which are essential for autonomous vehicle systems. Netradyne can also integrate crowd sourced road and driving behaviour data into its systems.

Hyundai said Netradyne's technology was more cost efficient than using traditional mobile mapping systems (MMS) because its devices are already fitted to numerous vehicle fleets currently operating throughout the US, potentially enabling more frequent, high quality HD map updates.

According to Hyundai, Netradyne has already captured and analysed over 1m unique miles of the 2.7m mile US paved road network, including numerous passes over the same roads which provide deeper insights into how driving behaviour and road conditions change throughout the year.

In late September Hyundai Motor Group announced an autonomous driving technology joint venture with Aptiv, a global mobility solutions technology company to advance the design, development and commercialization of SAE Level 4 and 5 autonomous technologies.

The joint venture would begin testing fully driverless systems from 2020 and have a production ready autonomous driving platform available for robotaxi providers, fleet operators and automotive manufacturers from 2022.
