Hyundai Motor Group has hired a leading former General Motors researcher to oversee an R&D centre dedicated to the development of fully autonomous vehicles.
Lee Jin-woo previously led autonomous driving technology development at Gm. He will head up the Hyundai Motor Group's newly established Intelligent Safety Technology Centre.

"The new centre will not only enhance existing Advanced Drive Assistance System technologies but also conduct research into artificial intelligence related self-driving car technologies with the aim of commercializing those technologies," Hyundai Motor said.
Hyundai Motor and Kia aim to develop highly automated vehicles by 2020 and fully autonomous vehicles by 2030.
Last year, Hyundai Motor outlined its connected car road-map, introducing four main service fields as part of its 'hyper-connected intelligent cars' concept. The mid- to long- term development focus includes: smart remote maintenance service, autonomous driving, smart traffic, and connectivity mobility hub, all of which will benefit from continued R&D investment in the fields of in-vehicle networks, cloud and big data analytics and connected car security technologies.
