At the end of last year the company established the Artificial Intelligence Research (AIR) laboratory in South Korea, led by Kim Jeong-hee – formerly the head of Naver Lab’s intelligence unit and a leading expert in deep learning.

Hyundai said the new AI centre in the US would also monitor market trends and technological developments and will discuss investment opportunities with Hyundai’s venture capital unit Cradle.

The automaker plans to hold a recruitment event in San Diego in August and will also expand partnerships with universities to help secure access to engineers.

Hyundai also plans to expand its Seoul-based AIR laboratory by hiring additional engineers to strengthen its AI ‘source technology’ capabilities, particularly in areas such as speech recognition, natural language processing, computer vision and data engineering.
